Dasho Karma Tshering currently serves as the Vice Chairperson of the Bhutan for Life Board of Trustees. He was appointed as the Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MoENR) on 30th December 2022, and concurrently serves as the Cluster Secretary for the Economic Cluster.
Prior to his current appointment, Dasho served as the Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MoEA) from 11th March 2020 to 30th December 2022, and as one of the Eminent Members of the National Council, Parliament of Bhutan, from 7th December 2015 to 10th March 2020.
Before joining the National Council, he briefly served as the Director of the Department of Hydropower & Power Systems under MoEA from July to December 2015, during which he also chaired the Bhutan Electricity Authority (BEA). Earlier, he held key leadership roles as the Chief Executive Officer of BEA (May 2010 – June 2012) and Director of the Department of Renewable Energy under MoEA (November 2011 – June 2015).
Dasho holds a Master’s Degree in Electric Power Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Australia, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rajasthan, India. He also completed a Certificate in Management from the Asian Institute of Management, Philippines, and undertook advanced training in Utility Regulation and Strategy (University of Florida, USA) and Management of Hydropower Development (Sweden and South Africa).
With nearly 28 years of distinguished service in the Royal Government of Bhutan, Dasho Karma Tshering has served in diverse capacities as an Engineer, Planner, Policy Maker, Regulator, Administrator, Member of Parliament, and Government Secretary.
